Pub of the Week: Fox and Roman, York

Normally I have no interest in visiting a chain pub, but I have become increasingly curious about The Fox and Roman pub on Tadcaster Road in York.

Why? Well, firstly, it is always buzzing. I have yet to pop in when it is not heaving, and don’t even think about it on race days given the Fox and Roman’s proximity to the racecourse. Even on the most extreme winter’s evening, dodging sleet and snow to get there, the place is cheery and welcoming.

There is little chance of getting one of the comfy armchairs in the large drinking-only bar area but we do manage one of the few remaining tables in the one of the two cosy dining rooms. The Fox was once used as stables and in 1833, a Roman grave was found on the site but I still choose not to look too closely at the rustic country-style décor fearing I may encounter more “fake” than I am comfortable with.

The bar boasts a range of cask ales amongst all the usual brands and there is a wine list with enough styles and prices to keep those preferring the grape happy. The Fox is food-led with a menu that offers more than just the expected bar classic and the food ordered was freshly cooked and was amongst the best I have eaten of late in a pub.

Great to find a chain that finally gets what pubs are about, no wonder it is always busy.
