Pub of the Week: The Plough, Allerthorpe

The A1079 Beverley to York road may be insanely busy all day long, but it's surprisingly poorly served by decent pubs.

There’s the odd one dotted along the route but you really have to turn off and drive a while before you find something really worth stopping for. A good example of this is to be found in the little village of Allerthorpe. Turn off at Pocklington, follow your nose for a couple of minutes and you’ll find the Plough sat on the bend in the road looking every inch the picturesque village pub.

The Plough has been a pub for almost 200 years now (the building is at least a century older than that) and it’s a cosy little farmhouse affair with wood beams, real fires and – most importantly – a front door on a latch. Always a sign of a good pub is a wooden door on a latch. There’s even a tiny little room next to the bar, that counts as a nook if not a cranny.

The pub is mainly given over to dining, so there are ex-sewing machine tables, comfy bench style seats, and bustling, efficient waiting staff.

The menu is packed with black pudding, Yorkshire pud and prawn cocktail type selections. I’d draw your attention to the hot roast beef and gravy sandwich if you’re visiting at lunchtime and they do a mean gammon, egg and chips of a night. The desserts are hearty and tempting too.

There are four local hand pulls on the bar and dogs are welcome, so it’s also a grand spot to retire to after a preparatory yomp in the Wolds.
