Pub of the Week: The Riverside, Sheffield

Just saying the words '˜The Riverside' conjures up an image of a charming little rural hostelry, nestling on the banks of a waterway, leading perhaps)to a towpath where ramblers and dog-walkers idle past.

Sorry to disappoint, but Sheffield’s pub with that very same name is next to a very busy road and the side that abuts the water has a sheer drop into the fast-flowing and occasionally slightly murky River Don.

The wide and spacious terrace is hugely popular on days when the weather is kind. The Riverside is something of a legend hereabouts. It serves brilliant beers – a wide selection of guest ales is always available, but their own Riverside Pale, created by The Brew Company, takes a lot of beating. It also has a good range of food that is both generous in quantity and quality – gentle warning though, no food after 5pm on Sundays.

It has a well-established role in the local music, arts and creative scene. There is something on just about every night at the Riverside, from folk to indie rock, from quiz nights to jazz.

It has wooden floors and spacious alcoves with just one (very long) bar, and the only problem is that the loos are up two flights of stairs.

The Riverside is no fuss, no frills, and is justifiably one of the most popular pubs in these parts. It may not have the glamour of the Thames, but it has honesty, integrity, a laid-back atmosphere – and cracking good beers.
