Why Yorkshire Dales bus funding decision is short-sighted – The Yorkshire Post says

THE YORKSHIRE Dales is rightly proud of its status as Europe’s most popular National Park – and with very good reason. Its beauty is unrivalled and natural environment largely unspoilt.

Yet, if it is to survive and thrive, a careful balance needs to be struck between visitor numbers and measures to protect the environment as part of the wider national effort to eliminate carbon emissions.

And while the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, like all public bodies, is facing an uncertain financial future, it will, nevertheless, need to revisit the decision not to extend support to the DalesBus network.

Though its reluctance to increase its grant to DalesBus is understandable in the current climate, it needs to remember that the Dales is not blessed by the best public transport and that the area will become increasingly reliant on bus services in the future if it is to welcome tourists without compromising its greatest asset – the environment.
