RE Chris Grayling’s new £100,000 a year a role for just seven hours a week advising a ports company (Tom Richmond, The Yorkshire Post, September 19).

Doubtless Chris Grayling, who does not have a strong record of success in some of his previous posts, will spend the majority of his working time in a comfortable office environment.

At a rough calculation, not counting annual leave, the salary quoted equates to £1,920.00 per week, at a rate of approximately £274.00 per hour.

A care worker, or a hospital cleaner, on the National Living Wage, earns, at a rough calculation £18,137.00 per year, £348.00 for a 40 hour week, at a rate of £8.72 per hour.

The working conditions, particularly in the current Covid situation will be among some of the most challenging imaginable.

The discrepancy is huge. I am at a loss to understand how it is possible to justify the immoral rate of pay.

LIKE Tom Richmond, I was more than bemused by Hutchison Ports’ placing a £100,000 per annum premium on Chris Grayling’s seafaring expertise. Thankfully, Grayling is no longer roaming the corridors of the country’s national security or running the railways.
