Huddersfield Town 2 Notts County 1: Record victory hands Town deserved place in footballing folklore

Striker Jordan Rhodes admitted it will take a long time for both Huddersfield Town’s record-breaking exploits and his scoring form to sink in.

The 21-year-old newly-capped Scotland prodigy bagged a brace to help the Terriers set a new Football League record of 43 matches unbeaten.

It also to took his personal tally to 21 goals in 11 games for club and country this season on a day when Town eclipsed Brian Clough’s 1970s Nottingham Forest side.

Huddersfield even have a better win ratio than Forest. They managed 21 wins and 21 draws while Town’s is now 25 wins and 18 draws.

“It’s great to achieve the record and it’s on our CVs forever now,” Rhodes said. “But it’s probably something that won’t sink in for a few years.”

On the scoring run he added: “I’m delighted to have got 20 goals so early. I never thought it would happen like that. Such a scoring run is beyond my wildest dreams.

“Two months ago I was stuck on four or five goals. All I’ve done is got my head down and kept working at it. It’s a mystery of football how things tend to come and go in cycles.”

Saturday’s display of clinical finishing showed why Rhodes has been recently linked with clubs including Newcastle United and Scottish giants Celtic.

Chairman Dean Hoyle, who ruled out any sale last week, again reiterated after the match that neither Rhodes or any of Town’s top talent will be leaving in January.

Rhodes’s first was a classic example of the centre-forward’s craft. He started the move straight from the second-half kick-off by setting Jack Hunt on his way down the right.

Hunt played a one-two with Scott Arfield while Rhodes zipped into the box from deep to be ready to head in the defender’s pinpoint cross at the far post.

The clincher on 65 minutes showed Rhodes’s predatory instincts. He pounced on a slip by former Town loan man Krystian Pearce on halfway and powerfully finished.

Hoyle added of the unbeaten record: “We can all take great pride. This run will go down in history and it will take some time for it to be broken.

“The players and coaching staff deserve immense credit. They found ways to win and draw matches when the odds were stacked against them.”

Not even Alan Lee’s straight red card, for allegedly retaliating with his elbow on 61 minutes after ex-Leeds defender Sam Sodje had fouled him, could dampen the occasion.

Neal Bishop’s consolation for County in the fourth minute of stoppage time was the game’s last action and then the ground erupted.

Boss Lee Clark came on to the pitch to celebrate while both he and the players got a standing ovation, including generous applause from visiting fans.

Rhodes feels Huddersfield are on the up and said: “It was a fantastic day for everyone.

“The key is we’ve got a really good team spirit running through the whole club.
