Ahead of the rest

This is one of 200 pieces of sculpture and works of art at the award-winning 20-acre Himalayan Garden, near Ripon, which this weekend opens to the public.

The garden has more than 1,000 different varieties of species and hybrid rhododendrons as well as 250 azalea varieties and 170 different magnolias.

Last year, the Himalayan Garden won the environmental project category in the 2009 Yorkshire Rural Awards.

It has a nursery selling nearly 200 different varieties of rhododendron as well as many other ericaceous shrubs and perennials.

Open daily (closed Mondays except Bank Holidays) until June 13, 10am-4. Admission is 6, children under-12 free.
