The best-value places to stay in Yorkshire

The top two both came from Devon though - with Plymouth taking top spot and Exeter next on the list. The chart was devised by Trivago, the hotel comparison website, whose headquarters are based in Dusseldorf, Germany.

To qualify for the list, cities were required to have a minimum of 50 hotels with an average of at least 150 reviews per hotel. Price and hotel ratings were taken into consideration.

Kate Reveley, of Marketing Sheffield, said: “ It’s not the first time Sheffield has ranked highly due to its affordable city break offer. Back in August the city came top for the second consecutive year of an annual cost comparison study carried out by TripAdvisor.

“The city has also recently made a move to brand itself as The Outdoor City, capitalizing on its proximity to the Peak District and the wealth of outdoor pursuits, with climbing and mountain biking already attracting large numbers of visitors.”

Wendy Ulyett, marketing manager for the Visitor Economy, said: “We’re delighted to see Sheffield as the leading Yorkshire destination offering visitors best value once again.

“Sheffield has a vibrant all year round events programme, alongside some world class culture which coupled with the City’s outdoor recreation scene mean that Sheffield’s unique position as a destination offers the best of both worlds – a vibrant city break and rural escape. All this, without breaking the bank, is now being recognised by the travel industry.

The Royal B&B, on Main Road in Dungworth, sat on top spot as the best-rated hotel in Sheffield. Also scoring impressively were Rother Valley View and Ravencar Farm.

York’s leading hotels included Bootham Gardens, Ascot House and Ashbourne House. Leeds could boast the merits of The Chambers - Park Place, Bridge Farm and Best Western Plus Milford.
