Budding talent contest

The Royal Horticultural Society is giving young gardeners the opportunity to have their designs judged by RHS gardeners and the general public.

This May half-term (May 29-June 6) as part of National Family Week 2010, RHS gardens are staging designs entered into this year's RHS Budding Gardener competition.

The competition to design a mini-garden at school was open to all member schools of the RHS Campaign for School Gardening (a free scheme for all schools).

Pallet gardens measuring only 1m x 1m will be on display at RHS Gardens Wisley, including Harlow Carr, in Harrogate, where they will be judged by RHS curators and special VIP guests. Garden visitors will also be invited to vote for their favourite.

Jim Gardiner, Chief Curator of RHS Gardens and one of the competition judges, said: "The standard of entries for last year's competition was fantastic so we are really looking forward to seeing this year's designs.

"The children entering the competition are the Chelsea Flower Show designers of the future so we are obviously keen to nurture their talent."
