Classical Preview: Quartet to display winning ways

Before readers accuse me of gross nepotism, let me hasten to make clear that my admiration for the outstanding young Carducci Quartet has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that two of its members are named Matthew and Emma Denton.

Coming to international attention when winning the 2007 Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York, their ascent into the league of the world's major quartets has been phenomenal.

Now encouraged by impressive sales of their debut album, they have since created their own Carducci label with the desire to promote 20th century music. That interest is reflected in the programme for their Huddersfield concert on Monday, and their Sheffield appearance next Saturday when works by Philip Glass and Moeran are flanked by more familiar quartets of Beethoven and Haydn.

Unusually the quartet is formed by two married couples, and it is another unusual grouping – the Katona Twins – with which they appear next March in York. Repeating music in their latest album, today's leading guitar duo, join Carducci in double concertos by Vivaldi and Astor Piazzolla.
