Classical Preview: Stars flock to Beverley chamber music festival

"THIS is the third year we have had to put on a festival without the support of the Arts Council of England," says Andrew Penny, chairman of the Beverley Chamber Music Festival.

That has been made possible by its founder, Martin Roscoe, one of the most popular pianists on the international concert circuit bringing famous names to Beverley. "This year we are paying tribute to the music of Chopin and Schumann, both born in 1810," Roscoe says.

There are local connections, with the Yorkshire-born singer, Claire Bradshaw, a former prize-winner in the Leeds International Piano Competition, Jin Ju and a work by Beverley composer, Anthony Hodges. Seven concerts are spread over four days starting next Wednesday with the trio formed by Roscoe, the violinist, Peter Cropper, and the principal cellist of the LSO, Moray Walsh. They play works by Haydn, Mozart and Tchaikovsky. Thursday sees a lunchtime recital devoted to Chopin's piano music played by Ju, and in the evening the composer's First Piano Concerto is played by Roscoe and the Coull Quartet. The quartet are joined by the double bassist John Tattersdill in Schubert's Trout Quintet.

Two previous BBC Young Musicians of the Year are featured: the violinist, Jennifer Pike is joined by Roscoe in sonatas by Beethoven, Schumann and Ravel, while the oboist, Nicholas Daniels, brings his Haffner Ensemble in an evening of Ibert, Mozart and Ravel. Saturday lunchtime is given to song, Clair Bradshaw is joined by her husband, Craig Ogden, Classic FM's number one guitarist.
