Dramatic ending for a freestanding recyclable work of art

YORKSHIRE Sculpture Park sometimes encourages visitors to ‘interact’ – touch and feel to you and me – its art.

It also makes it expressly clear when interaction is strictly forbidden. Which you might think would be the case with the first major UK installation by artist Aeneas Wilder which is now on show at the park.

The Edinburgh-born, Japan-based artist has spent over 200 hours using uniform lengths of wood, without fixing materials, to make Untitled # 155, a freestanding and complex structure, which commands the vast space at Longside Gallery and was conceived especially for the space.

A spokesman for the Park said: “Wilder both references and challenges ideas about architecture by providing an enclosed, seemingly safe space for visitors to inhabit, but one which is unstable and liable to collapse. Wilder’s compositions dominate the spaces they occupy, encouraging visitors to enter and interact with the work.”

If you are interested in seeing the work, it might be worth getting your skates on as, after three months the Park will play host to the UK’s first ‘kick-down’ event, when the artist will kick his artistic structure to the ground.

The spokesman said: “This event will be an unforgettable experience and poses questions about the idea of artwork as asset or investment, inviting a revaluation of how the value of works of art is assessed. The process of recycling – of both previous artworks and materials found locally – is an important aspect of Wilder’s practice, referencing a world in constant flux.”

The piece will be on display until November 3 at the Park, when the exhibition will close in dramatic fashion.
