Food Matters: Tea room scents victory

Yorkshire's tea shops have been recognised in the Tea Guild's annual awards.

The ultimate winner of Top Tea Place 2010 is The Black Swan Tea Room, Helmsley. The winner of the Top London Afternoon Tea 2010 award is the Palm Court at The Langham Hotel, and the winner of the Top City and Country Hotel 2010 award is The Manor House Hotel, Castle Combe, Wiltshire.

Little Betty's in York has been given an Award of Excellence.

Licensees Ashley and Kelly McCarthy, who own Ye Old Sun Inn in Colton, and The White Swan in Wighill, both near Tadcaster, have been named Publicans of the Year. The awards are run annually by The Publican magazine and Ye Old Sun Inn beat five other finalists to the top spot in the publican of the year category. Judges commended Ashley and Kelly for "demonstrating a passion for the pub trade and a willingness to invest in all aspects of the business."

Wine tasting

Virgin Wines is heading to Leeds on May 8 to host its first wine tasting in the city.

Wine enthusiasts should head to The Loft, Cross York Street between noon and 5pm where they will be able to try from a range of more than 120 wines.

Customers can purchase tickets online at www.virginwines.com/tastings1 for 15 per person and they are available on a first come first served basis.
