A good year for the lenses as we capture a county for all seasons

From the rolling hills and lush green valleys of the Dales to the industrial skylines of the county’s biggest cities and the cobbled streets that wind round the historic coastal communities, there is a variety which you simply don’t find elsewhere in the country. It means that when it comes to selecting the images for The Yorkshire Post calendar we are spoilt for choice.

It also means that whittling down hundreds of stunning photographs to just 12 is a difficult job. This year was no different as we tried to represent as many corners of the county as possible and in the end we went for a mix of familiar Yorkshire landmarks as well as a few hidden gems.

The pleasure boats that sail along the River Ouse at York, the imposing Emley Moor television transmitter and Whitby’s picture postcard harbour will be familiar to many. But as the months of 2016 pass by we also hope to bring some lesser known landmarks into sharp focus.

That was the reason for including a photograph of natural artworks in fields in Thixendale. Waves and Time – a series of circular earthworks – was created a few years ago by landscape artist Chris Drury. It was supposed to be part of an al fresco art trail to boost tourism to the Wolds, but so far just four of the 10 installations have been completed.

Elsewhere, our photographers turned their lens on a redundant mill tower at Appleton Roebuck surrounded by bright yellow rapeseed, stone barns in the snowy fields at Yokenthwaite and Gayle Mill at Hawes in the Dales. Tucked away off the main road, the mill dates back to the late 18th century and has helped clothe Britain, supported the local community and manufactured tools and equipment that still shape the Yorkshire Dales landscape to this day.

Every single image in our calendar tells a story about Yorkshire, whether it be about its beautiful villages, the working rural landscape or the flora and fauna that make it so distinct.
