More than 50 artists from across the north and beyond are exhibiting and selling work at the show, which runs until Sunday September 25.

The scale of the cathedral allows for a collection of work to be shown by each artist, rather than an individual piece, and this year a pop-up shop has been added to make the artwork more accessible than ever before to visitors.

Each artists was selected through a gruelling application process, with judges selecting the final participants in June.

This year’s exhibiting artists include Pateley Bridge based Joseph Hayton, who originally trained as a stonemason at York College before turning to sculpture, and Ampleforth photographer Lucy Saggers, whose black and white photography pieces capture the ordinary moments of rural life that often go unseen.

Great North Art Show committee member Emma Beckwith said: “There really is something for everyone, from textile art, to abstract and sculpture.

“Alongside the pieces in the show, each artist can bring ten original artworks or prints to sell at the pop-up shop, which means the public can go away with them on the day instead of waiting to collect their piece at the end of the exhibition.”
