Health Matters: Old books can help charity

National charity Bowel Cancer UK is asking you to help save lives by taking part in the Big Book Sale this October. All you need to do is gather together your unwanted books and hold a Big Book Sale any time during the month. Then, invite your friends, family, colleagues and fellow bookworms.

Funds from the campaign will go towards raising awareness of bowel cancer, the UK's second biggest cancer killer. The disease is highly treatable if caught early but awareness is still very low in the UK.

Look out for bookmarks advertising the campaign at your local Waterstone's, Foyles and Daunts, and at literary festivals. Also, keep an eye on the charity's website , Facebook page and Twitter feed for details of how you can get your hands on signed copies of books from well known authors such as Alan Bennett.

Diet fit for champions

Engage Super League players took time out of their gruelling season for a nutritional food master class with one of the country's finest chefs. Brian Turner set up his kitchen on the pitch at Headingley to demonstrate what Rugby League players really need to eat to maintain a healthy diet.

"Engage with your health" ambassadors, Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Paul Wellens, were among those who attended the healthy brunch and know all too well the importance of good day-to-day nutrition. The players were invited by Brian Turner to assist in preparing a range of recipes, from health boosting fruit smoothies, to chicken breasts cooked in brioche and parmesan, served on a warm potato salad, packed full of protein and carbohydrates.

Each recipe was designed to optimise dietary intake and analysed by nutritionists from Leeds Metropolitan University who were able to lend scientific rationale behind the choices. The regular intense training undertaken by Rugby League players requires special attention to be paid to maintaining adequate carbohydrate and fluid intakes, to supply the optimum amount of energy and essential nutrients.

Brian Turner said: "I chose recipes that I know to be full of carbohydrates, calories and micronutrients – all key components to help a professional athlete through the toughest part of the season."
