Health Matters: Pharmacy first with video help

A Leeds pharmacy has become the first in Yorkshire to introduce Healthpoint TV to advise customers about medical conditions.

Baskind Pharmacy, on Stainbeck Lane, Chapel Allerton, is introducing the video technology, a free-standing console showing 20-second educational films covering 70 topics from asthma and blood pressure to smoking and weight control, to help people better understand treatment choices and how therapy works.

The videos are allied to a service that enables customers to manage their health as well as obtaining a printout with advice on suitable medicines and other health information.

Healthpoint contains details on 3,500 health conditions and has a touch screen monitor similar to those at self service train station ticket areas, visitor attractions and supermarket check-outs for users to access information through a series of prompts.

Open day helps

rehabilitation

A free open day is being held to show how physiotherapy and technology can help with rehabilitation.

Physiofunction is hosting the event to offer people with disabilities as a result of neurological injury, illness or disease the opportunity to see how new rehabilitation technology can help them gain independence.

There will be a number of specially-trained physiotherapists available, with expert advice on recovery and rehabilitation from neurological conditions.

Baby boost for

making friends

Having a baby is good for your social life. Researchers have found mothers in Leeds will, on average, make eight new acquaintances after giving birth. More than half (58 per cent) of mums in the region say they've lost contact with one set of friends but gained an even larger bunch since giving birth.

The research was carried

out to mark the launch of Yummy Mummy Week, the fund-raising campaign by children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent. It encourages mothers of all ages to host their own event to raise funds for families hit by childhood cancer.

To find out more about the week which runs from (March 6-14) go to www.yummy mummy.org.uk or call 08451 206 658 to register interest.
