Health Matters: Sam sets pace at health run

A nine-year-old Hull boy with Cystic Fibrosis and his family are calling on people to join them for the Warner's Health Santa 3k Walk & Run in Peter Pan Park/Costello Park, Hull on Sunday.

Sam Boswell will be taking part with his seven-year-old sister Lucy and mum Fran. Sam was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) at birth, a condition which clogs his lungs and digestive system with thick, sticky mucus, resulting in chronic infections and inflammation and difficulty digesting food. He was born with a blocked bowel and had nine operations when he was just a few days old.

Sam now faces treatment every day to stay well, including taking over 30 tablets to help him digest his food, breathing in drugs through a nebuliser twice a day to help fight infection and break down mucus, and twice-daily physiotherapy sessions to shift mucus from his lungs. To sign up, or for more information, call Warner's on 01482 505850.

A project which aims to transform the health and well-being of people who have retired, or are just about to do so has been launched. The Livewell Programme run by experts at Newcastle University, will work with volunteers to try to improve their health through exercise and healthier eating, including adopting a more Mediterranean-style diet. If the trial proves successful it could be rolled out across the country.Studies have shown that in those people who eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, cereals and fish, modest amounts of dairy products and less red meat and saturated fats, the risk of dying from cancer is reduced by up to 24 per cent, the risk of developing Parkinson's Disease or Alzheimer's Disease was reduced by up to 52 per cent, and the risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke by 36 per cent. To find out more about the project visit the Time of

Your Life Exhibition at the Yorkshire Event centre, Harrogate on December 4 and 5. Visit www.time-of-your-life.com for details or call 01422 260226 for tickets.
