Health Matters: Using yoga to shed the pounds

Yorkshire Yoga and Therapy Centre in Knaresborough is inviting members of the public to take part in a new six-month project that is funded by the Learning Skills Council. Weekly classes of Thinnerpeace yoga will be free of charge to overweight or obese adults who are unemployed or work less than 17 hours a week.

Thinnerpeace student Jean Richardson from Ripon said: "Before a friend of mine told me about the benefits of yoga, I thought it was only for thin, flexible people. The weight loss has been slow, but I've been able to maintain the loss because of that. Altogether, I've lost about two stone and I've kept it off."

No previous yoga experience is necessary. Participation is suitable for all levels of fitness.

Findings from the project will help to inform a new research trial planned by the York Trials Unit at the University of York.

A free Introductory Session is being offered at the Yorkshire Yoga and Therapy Centre from 1pm to 4pm on Tuesday, January 12. Contact 01423 864343 or e-mail: info@ yorkshireyoga.co.uk for more details.

Survey reveals eczema bullying

Many of the people in the UK who suffer from eczema have been bullied at school or in the workplace as a direct result of their skin condition.

The survey commissioned by Simple Derma revealed that

10 per cent of those bullied experienced negative comments from school friends or work colleagues about the appearance of their skin.

This occurred at least two or three times a week, with seven per cent of those surveyed suffering bullying on a daily basis.

With one in five children and one in 12 adults in the UK reported to suffer from eczema, the poll reveals that having this condition affects the confidence of more than half of sufferers in the UK, equating to more than 4.2 million people in the UK.
