Jazz Preview: Looking forward to an autumn of great jazz

Gilad Atzmon, a human hurricane among saxophonists, gusts into the Millennium Hall at Sheffield tonight with his Orient House Ensemble, founded in 2000 and still playing with a fire which reflects its dynamic leader.

Atzmon's colleagues are his long-standing pianist Frank Harrison, bassist Yaron Stavi and drummer Eddie Hick, who was born in York and studied at Leeds College of Music.

Forthcoming visitors to Sheffield include the Karen Sharp Quartet (Sept 24), Tony Kofi (Oct 1), If Destroyed Still True (Oct 8), the Simon Purcell Quintet (Oct 15), the Sheffield University Jazz Orchestra (Oct 22), the Benn Clatworthy Quartet (Oct 29) and – in the not too distant future – Stan Tracey 's Octet (Crucible Studio, Nov 20).

The new season at Huddersfield Jazz in the Cellar at the Lawrence Batley Theatre opens tomorrow with a quintet led by clarinettist Mark Crooks, whose skills led to the notable accolade of being invited to perform in a Benny Goodman(Artie Shaw programme at the Lincoln Center in New York.

Guitar legend John Etheridge has saxophonist Dave O'Higgins as a guest when he visits the Cellar with his Trio North (Ben Crosland and Dave Tyas complete the line-up) on October 16.

A widely praised singer, Zoe Gilby, promotes her new album on November 13, and alto-saxophonist Matt Wates wraps up the year on December 4 at the helm of a sextet bristling with talent.
