Jazz Preview: Region's best get to blow their own trumpets

Snow, frost and sub-zero temperatures failed to thwart the inaugural Jazz Yorkshire awards in the Crossley Gallery at Dean Clough Mills, Halifax.

Winning candidates were nominated by the public, and 200 guests defied the weather to attend the presentation which was hosted by Nigel Slee, Jazz Yorkshire's development manager. He said: "It was a splendid turn-out on such an unpleasant night and wonderful to recognise the exceptional contributions made by so many people."

Leeds based If Destroyed Still True were voted band of the year and the award for album of the year went to Trio VD's Fill It Up With Ghosts.

Jazz in the Spa at Boston Spa took the club/venue award, and the Phoenix Inn, York, collected the pub venue accolade. Other winners were: Big band: James Hamilton Jazz Orchestra; Composer/arranger: James Hamilton; Instrumentalist: Simon Kaylor; vocalist: Nicki Allan; Young Musician: Matt Anderson; Festival: Marsden Jazz Festival; Lifetime Achievement: Ronnie Bottomley; Educator: John Ellis; Supporter: Gerry Moore; Fundraiser: Amy Ward (Rydale Jazz Club); Website: Darren Dutson Bromley; Business Sponsor: Fennell Green and Bates. Modesty forbids revealing who won the Journalist of the Year award, but thanks to everybody who voted for me. All the winners were serenaded to the platform by Alan Barnes and Dave Newton.

The wonderful Liane Carroll sings at The Venue in Leeds on Tuesday. Christmas parties at Wakefield Jazz (tonight), Scarborough Jazz (Wednesday) and Doncaster Conservative Club (Thursday) will set the Yuletide mood.
