Jazz Preview: Unmissable appearance by original jazz artist

Soweto Kinch is often described as one of the most exciting and versatile performers on the jazz scene and Yorkshire audiences will have a chance to see him perform when he arrives at the Harrogate International Festival later this month. The winner of numerous MOBO and BBC Jazz Awards, Kinch will not only be performing tracks from his new album, The New Emancipation, alongside a nine-piece band, but is also working as a guest curator. Mentored by Courtney Pine, Kinch will be hosting a special event, Freedom Music, exploring the development of his distinctive sound. Playing music from the American South and Gil Scott Heron, through to contemporary artists such as Robert Glasper, the saxophonist and rapper plans to explore race in politics as well as the travails of independent recording artists. Kinch, an Oxford University graduate, is known for doing things a little differently. His second album A Life in the Day of B19 – Tales of the Tower Block featured narration from Moira Stewart and his appearance at Harrogate will be one not to miss.

Soweto Kinch, Freedom Music, St John Fisher High School, July 15; New Emancipation Live, July 31, Harrogate Theatre. Tickets for both on 01423 502116 or online at www.harrogate-festival.org,uk
