Autumn always brings with it an air of promise, a spirit of adventure, sending a shiver of excitement among true fashion lovers.

This is when it gets serious; spring and summer trends offer sweet, light music, but it’s the autumn/winter that brings the richest, deepest symphony, encompassing both the classical and the experimental within its twists and themes.

Shape is key and this season shows a fresh approach to the feminine form, combining curves with a demure edge, waists nipped in, skirts full, flared and falling below the knee – retro, but somehow also bringing a contemporary and modernist feel.

This is what fashion does so well, paying homage to the past as it reinvents, re-configures and updates.

The shoulder becomes softer as coats and jackets become more cocoon-like, but always elegant and minimalist. Slim-line trouser suits in exotic patterns and prints, meanwhile, bring head-to-toe sharp, bright tailoring.

Classical femininity rules. Pink is a key seasonal colour, from pale blush to kitten-candy, featuring in soft wools and suiting, crepes and satins, rippling silks, faux fur and PVC. Wear head to toe or team with grey or black.

Punk rules, too, although this is punk revisited for 2013/14, with tartan, leather and studs taking on a far chicer tone than back in the day.

The spirit of rebellion can add a twist
to all outfits, from workwear to evening and party looks, simply by mixing in a studded sleeve top, or PVC trousers, a leather skirt, a red leopard clutch or chained boots.

Glisten and shine is turned down a notch, though still adding magical decorative interest.

Feathers, especially soft and swirly maribou, bring luxury, glamour and a flurry of fun, while faux fur gets in colour, canary yellow and scarlet, pulsing blue and, of course, pink to bring laid-back modern luxe.

A blend of tradition and rebellion, of opulence and minimalism, the serious and the fun. This is a season to enjoy and learn from.
