Make do and mend for the perfect look

It is that time of year when the predictions for the next season's trends start to roll in.

The glossy monthly mags are already working away on their winter editions and pulling together plenty of lovely new looks for the months ahead.

The economic climate has really affected the way we shop and there is a definite sense of going back to basics – to take only what we need and to try to maintain a sustainable lifestyle.

A look which has been creeping in for a while, but is set to go huge, is utilitarian.

This look is all about beauty in simplicity. It takes away all the pomp and really reflects the mood of the last 12 months.

Colours are simple and muted and furniture, where possible, is reclaimed to keep the "make do and mend" mentality which has been a big part of 2010 so far.

The canvas for this look is created from stark white walls and rustic floorboards. Keep everything as simple as possible and don't be afraid of mixing and matching as many tones and textures as possible.

Any clutter should be picked with careful consideration.

Add in only items of interest that bring something to the room.

Just because we're going for simple doesn't mean you have to forego comfort, but this look definitely isn't about cushions and throws. Instead, make sure you opt for a sofa which looks fantastic but is also comfortable without all the fussy accessories.

My personal choice would be something from De Sede or the beautiful Le Cobusier sofa.

Team your sofa with the Hagan coffee table which is part of the Trees 4 Trees range of ethically sourced furniture.

For the bedroom, there's the very stylish Epping range which has natural charm in abundance. Team with grey if you think white will be too much when trying to relax.
