The poppy – a tough old soldier suited to remember the fallen

Remembrance Sunday, when the country pays its respects to the fallen of world wars and many more minor, bloody conflicts.

And the symbol of all those, some would say pointless, deaths, is one of the most beautiful, fragile and yet incredibly strong flowers – the poppy.

Sow handfuls of the tiny, black seeds in April and thin out as the plants appear (or scatter heads-full in August and let them take their chance with Nature).

The flowers will eventually be held aloft on seemingly-fragile stalks, but they bend with the wind.

Just dead-head regularly to encourage more blooms.
