Review: She's Out of My League (15)**

Serial loser/doormat Kirk (Jay Baruchel) winds up with gorgeous blonde Molly – all teeth and cleavage – when he returns her mobile phone after a mix-up at the airport.

Naturally, his friends can't believe his luck. Neither can he. Or Molly's pal. Or her parents. And, soon, even the beauteous Molly (Alice Eve) is wondering why she's with this skinny little guy.

There are numerous nervous dates as this oddest of odd couples shares a skewed dynamic. Yet at the heart of this sub-American Pie/Sex Drive/What Happens in Vegas rip-off is the rudimentary message that, often, all it takes is a good man to melt the heart of even the most inaccessible babe.

Nonsense like that happens in the movies. This formulaic effort from Jim Field Smith throws in the mixed bag of pals – the sarcastic, aggressive one, the fat blimp, the good-looking stud – alongside the tried-and-tested approach of matching a sophisticated girl about town with a blue-collar kid.

It's also coarse, lacks charm and frequently opts for profanity over wit. In fact, this is a spectacularly witless sex comedy that manages to tease its audience without ever delivering the goods.

Baruchel, mourning the loss of his previous girlfriend, is watchable in a Jason (American Pie) Biggs sort of way. But the ensemble here in no way compares to the lads and ladettes of the Pie franchise.

There is fun to be had from witnessing a cringe-worthy family dinner and, later, a close-quarter hockey stand-off in the basement. But the laughs are hard-won.

This forgettable entry in 21st century sex comedies focuses mostly on Alice Eve, though points are awarded for the ingenious use of her real parents, Sharon Maughan and Trevor Eve, as her parents on screen.

She's perfectly believable as a smart and slightly vulnerable sexpot, but she'll have to be careful to avoid typecasting if she wants a career Stateside.
