Shaw set to show how it is done

Ian Shaw, one of the vocal treasures of British jazz, gives a solo concert at Seven Jazz in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, next Thursday. “He is a master of jazz singing and Britain’s answer to Mark Murphy,” says promoter Steve Crocker. Aspiring singers are invited to a 60-minute master class by Shaw before the show.

Ian, whose recent performances include the Dubai International Jazz Festival, will accompany himself at the piano. There will be songs from his new album, The Abbey Road Sessions.

Wakefield Jazz hosts an attractive line-up at Eastmoor Road tonight when the Andy Panayi and Mark Nightingale quartet is joined by pianist David Newton in a programme dedicated to the music of Cole Porter. The club describe the evening as a band by request playing music by request, and it sounds like a winning recipe.

Jazz Day at Scarborough’s multi-arts Coastival tomorrow has Dennis Rollins’ Badbone and Co and the Sarah Ellen Hughes Quartet in the afternoon followed by Claire Martin and A Tribute to Atlantic Jazz in the evening at the Spa Ocean Room.

Huddersfield Jazz presents the Clark Tracey sextet in the cellar at the Lawrence Batley Theatre tomorrow night, while traditionalists will converge on Armley Conservative Club to hear Barry Martyn’s Young Bloods prove that the spirit of the New Orleans pioneers still lives.
