Whether it's for party times or for festive shopping or outdoor walks, capes offer statement outerwear this season. Stephanie Smith picks out her favourites from the High Street and online stores.

Belted fluted-sleeve camel cape

DETAIL: In this season's key camel colour and with those natty neat and stylish volume sleeves, this luxurious looking but reasonably priced cape is ideal to wear with jeans or with camel skirt or trousers for all-toning look. BHS is really improving with its fashion offering and this classic key season piece is a good example. It's worth taking a look at its partywear, too.

Suits: Curvy and pear shapes.

DETAIL: Flamboyant and festively colourful, this bright red checked cape is the perfect shape to wear with leggings, skinnies and pencil skirts, and would look fabulous over a navy or red, or cream, knitted or silk tunic dress for Christmas. Ideal for those family walks on the Scottish estate (Kate Middleton, take note). Just add a Tam O'Shanter (okay, maybe not).
