Snow Patrol

Well, what a way to open the New Year – snow, snow... and then more snow.

This obviously presents more than a few wardrobe dilemmas, the chief of which is safety versus style.

Now, I know there are those who believe that Uggs are the very antithesis of fashion but they show few signs of dying out and they do offer a cosy option for feet in this weather, although they are surprisingly pathetic on downhill slopes as they have no grip – so don't even think about taking them out for a proper walk. I'm afraid walking boots and wellies are the only way to go in the sort of snow we've experienced this week, but it's not all bad news – just check out these Jimmy Choo for Hunter wellies on the right.

There are two ways to go when it comes to dressing up for the outdoors – layering, or pared down tweed.

First layering, to which there is indeed an art. The aim is to look effortlessly cool, while feeling all cosy warm. The key to this lies in mixing fine texture, preferably from the same colour palette – neutrals are easiest. Try a short charcoal grey wool jacket over a long grey or taupe fine knit jumper or button-through cardigan, over skinning jeans or leggings and finish off with a scarf (look out for the double ones, like two scarves together, in similar but different knits – see Warehouse).

A knit dress, or a knit top and pencil skirt, is a good starting point, over which to layer cardis, jackets and gilets, again, keeping it all fine and slim and toning. Top off with a snood for good measure. Rein it all in with a slim belt if it starts to look unwieldy.

As an alternative, look out for the fabulous sleek new tweed tailoring we are starting to see more and more of. Traditional with a twist, now tweed coats and jackets are so well made and designed, they look almost sculpted, in beautiful colour palettes of moss and slate and charcoal.
