The spice of life as sweets go online to a global audience

It may be a shop selling nostalgic sweets from yesteryear, but Bah Humbugs, in Masham, is embracing the latest technology to make its sweets available around the world.

Opened in May 2004 by sweet-toothed local entrepreneur Lucy Scott-Paul, Bah Humbugs has already gained fame for appearing on Emmerdale and for its amazing portraits of Elvis and The Queen – made entirely from jelly beans.

Bah Humbugs is set to gain a worldwide profile with the launch of its brand new website and online store – meaning people across the world can now buy bags or hampers of childhood favourites, including Cherry Lips, Midget Gems, Pontefract Cakes, and Sherbet Pips to name just a few of the delights on offer.

Visitors to the website will be able to register and buy sweets securely online in any quantity, find out about featured products, special offers and best sellers, and read the always lively and entertaining Bah Humbugs blog.

But Lucy hopes that her website will be much more than just on online shop.

She is active on Facebook and Twitter, and the interactive website includes regular competitions and a blog.

"The new site is the bee's knees when it comes to buying sweets online, with loads of areas for customer interaction. Not only will people be able to order their favourite sweets and hampers online but they can join in with all the Bah Humbugs banter as well.

"There aren't any other sweet websites out there like this one, and we're delighted to be the one at the forefront."

Lucy got the idea for Bah Humbugs sweet shop after a few nostalgic conversations with friends about the sweets they used to eat from the tuck shop.

"Within a month of having the initial idea, I'd found a suitable shop in the Yorkshire Dales, sourced all the suppliers and roped in loads of family and friends to transform the shop into a haven for sweet fanatics, and Bah Humbugs was born. The sweets went down a storm from the outset."

Today, Bah Humbugs has one of the largest selections of traditional English sweets, liquorices, lollipops, toffees, fudges, jellies and mints online.

"We're extremely proud to boast that Bah Humbugs has now become renowned in the confectionery world as the one-stop-shop for all things liquorice.

"We stock more than 50 varieties of liquorice in different flavours and textures from throughout the world, which is very significant, as Yorkshire has historically been synonymous with

the manufacture of liquorice."

The new website has been built and designed by burgeoning digital agency Intune Media, based in nearby Knaresborough.

Jessica Kemp, a director at Intune Media, said of the Bah Humbugs project: "How could we not have been excited by a project like this?

"We loved the concept of Bah Humbugs straight away: the idea of selling sweets that bring back nostalgic memories of childhood for adults, as well as introducing today's kids to traditional and retro sweets that they might not have come across before."

"It's always lovely to make a trip to Masham to buy sweets from the store, but

it's wonderful that people from around the world can now buy bags and hampers of these wonderful sweets online at any time."
