Filming in Malton of classic play

David Thewlis, Ken Stott and Miranda Richardson have been cast for BBC One’s adaptation of JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls, produced by Drama Republic.

Location scouts picked out the market town as one of their sites and selected two Fitzwilliam Malton Estate–owned properties for some of the interior shots.

Mark Gladwin, location manager for the production, said: “The people of Malton have been very welcoming and everyone at the Fitzwilliam Estate has been incredibly helpful with our filming. I wish we had more to do here as it has been a great experience.”

Filming was today (Friday) taking place at York House, which was selected alongside The Green Man for various scenes during the shooting of the play, penned in 1912 by Bradford-born Priestley.

Roddy Bushell, manager of the estate, said: “We are delighted that some of Malton’s iconic properties will be used in this BBC production. It’s another chance for Malton to shine on a national network.”

David Thewlis, whose recent roles include Harry Potter and War Horse, will star as Inspector Goole who calls in on the wealthy Birling family following the suicide of a young woman.

Howard Ella, producer on An Inspector Calls said: “Yorkshire provides an incredible backdrop for television drama, and the people are always incredibly friendly, making it a great place to film.”

Filming is set to continue in early March and the production will air later this year as part of BBC One’s season of classic 20th century texts.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “It’s great to hear that an old literary favourite is being adapted for the small screen, and it’s even better to hear that filming is taking place right here in Yorkshire. We’re seeing Yorkshire’s stock as a location for filming rise and rise at the moment, and it will be great to see the charms of Malton on televisions across the nation. It can only mean more people wanting to visit Yorkshire, and yet more success for the county’s tourism industry.”

Malton is the latest spot in the region to capture the attention of location scouts. Last year stars from the big-screen version of Dad’s Army were filming in Bridlington and Scarborough.
