Programme of events to celebrate 20th anniversary of Brassed Off

A YEAR-long celebration of a South Yorkshire town's 'special relationship' with brass music, inspired by the 20th anniversary of the film which took it to cinema screens around the world, will begin next month.

Released in 1996, Brassed Off told the story of a colliery brass band conductor struggling to maintain the morale of his musicians when the future of the pit is thrown into doubt.

Filmed in and around Barnsley, and featuring and inspired by the real story of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the anniversary has prompted the town’s The Civic theatre to put together a programme of events celebrating its meaning to the community.

Chief executive at The Civic, Helen Ball, said: “Throughout 2016, to mark the twentieth anniversary of Brassed Off we will be celebrating Barnsley’s special relationship with brass music. We begin this season by bringing together brass musicians with contemporary dance and circus artists: the results of which are really exciting and now to be missed.”
