Review: Frisky and Mannish

Assembly Hall, Edinburgh Fringe

They’re the latest in a long line of mixed sex duos currently taking the world of comedy by the pigtails, but while others revel in the kitsch elements that a male/female duet naturally lean towards, with Frisky & Mannish they are an unassuming explosion of talent (and a little bit kitsch too).

Whether they’re mashing up Kate Nash and Kate Bush, or lambasting Kelly Clarkson and Lana del Ray, Laura Corcoran and Matthew Floyd Jones are two Oxford graduates who use their remarkable vocal and musical strengths to needle pop culture and pop music.

Ultimate children of the 80s, they are a product of the Heat, multi-digital channel generation and they make no bones about it. But while they show a clear love and hate for some of the nuances of modern media, they always do so with wry observation, intelligence and genuine flair. Which is why they’ve been such a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe over the past few years and why their Extra-Curricular Activities tour is now going on the road, arriving in Bradford next month.

Yes, they’re a hoot, and silly to boot, but they’ve achieved something by forging comedy which is clearly aimed at a youthful audience but avoids being patronising or too cringeworthy.

The heaving bosoms of Laura (Frisky) and the tight leather trousers sported by Matthew (Mannish) are only a minor distraction from the fact that they have incredible voices, an obvious ear for music and an eerie ability to impersonate everyone from Made in Chelsea ‘actors’ to grime artists.

The end result is quickfire bubblegum comedy which never cloys, but endears
you to the duo with every skit and gag. This is unashamed trivia and glossy mag indulgence, so they won’t be to everyone’s tastes (don’t take your parents or anyone over 50). For everyone else, however, Frisky & Mannish remain a mouthwatering proposition.
