Trains on track to delight as part of nostalgia weekend

According to collector Nick Beilby 1930s Hornby train sets “are great toys for little boys who haven’t grown up.”

They will be taking over the magnificent library at Sledmere House, owned by Sir Tatton Sykes as part of a nostalgia weekend, expected to attract thousands of people.

Mr Beilby, a member of the Hornby Railway Collectors Association, said: “We were brought up with them when we were kids in the early 50s and 60s and never got rid of them.”

Two full sets featuring stations, engine sheds, a variety of rolling stock, and different types of locomotives, cows in a field “lead ones of course”, run mainly on clockwork will be laid out on large tables in the library.

Sir Tatton said: “It is a long time since I have seen a train set like this and I will be delighted to see them running in the library.”

The weekend, organised by the North East Club for Pre-war Austins on June 25 and June 26, will see over 400 classic cars gathering at the stately home, along with a 1930s London Bus, The Nostalgia Re-enactment Group including The Pontefract Home Guard as well as Peter Baker of Decade Music, The 40’s Dancing Chums and Northern Soul.

The Yorkshire Wolds Railway Restoration Project, which is involved in restoring part of the Malton-Driffield line, will also make an appearance.
