Vegetables to the fore as allotment society celebrates 50th anniversary

Harrogate's annual allotment show is celebrating something special this year – its 50th anniversary.

As usual, the town's Sun Pavilion will be packed with classes for vegetables, fruit, flowers, jams and cakes and children's classes.

And outside, there will be stalls and displays, cake stalls, books, honey, plants and produce, tombola, raffle, cards, jewellery, willow weaving, children's activities and even environmental groups and music.

All that happens on August 22, and as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, the Harrogate and District Allotment Federation and Harrogate Borough Council have created an allotment in the Valley Gardens as an educational area to show the difference in growing styles and techniques over the last 50 years.

One side is planted with crops popular in the 1960s and the other side is planted with what is popular in 2010. As the allotment will be on show only until autumn, the vegetables are those that will crop during the summer season and will also be ornamental.

The Federation's secretary, Clive Pickles, has coordinated the project with support from the council's Valley Gardens'

park's team.
