Action needed to stop UK from falling behind

LAST week, the government released trade figures which were weaker than forecast, prompting some commentators to speculate on a triple-dip recession.

As part of the Africa Free Trade Initiative, the UK is advising African governments on how infrastructure investment can help to unblock economic growth on the continent.

There’s an opportunity to learn similar lessons here. The hub airport capacity squeeze is seeing us fall ever further behind our European competitors in the race for connections to emerging markets.

• Heathrow currently offers flights to 14 destinations in Africa not served by any other UK airport (including Egypt).

• Heathrow currently offers flights to nine destinations in the Middle East not served by any other UK airport (excluding Egypt).
