The online retailer already operates a number of small stations in the UK that act as hubs for deliveries in their local area. These stations – each around 50,000 sq ft – are leased in Birmingham, Oxford, Milton Keynes and a number of locations in London.

A spokeswoman for Amazon said that the local hubs were in place to complement the work of its existing carrier partners, and to ensure it continues “to deliver for customers”.

She said: “As we continue to grow as a company we need to increase our capacity for deliveries.

“The UK delivery programme has already created more than 170 new jobs at Amazon ranging from shift managers to site managers as well as in support functions such as HR and facilities.

“A further four delivery stations are expected to open in the UK in 2014 and will create an additional 75 new jobs at Amazon.

“The new sites will be located in the North West of England, the South West of England, the Midlands and Yorkshire.”

Amazon did not say where in Yorkshire the hub would be based.

Amazon said that together the UK delivery stations will also create almost 1,000 new positions indirectly for regional delivery partners.

The spokeswoman said: “These stations provide more capacity and flexibility within our delivery network.”
