BAM saves jobs of specialist painters

The contractor working on the refurbishment of Leeds City Varieties has saved the jobs of four specialist painters after their employer went into administration.

BAM, which is carrying out the £9.2m theatre restoration in Leeds city centre, has taken on four out of more than 40 former painters from J Ibbotson, a Doncaster-based specialist painting contractor which went into administration last month.

It hopes to retain the painters, who are carrying out gold leaf and other decorative work at City Varieties, for future contracts once the project is completed in May.

Project manager Geoff Wright said the painters formed a “valuable part” of BAM’s supply chain of sub-contractors.

J Ibbotson, which specialised in commercial decorating, operated for 52 years and had a turnover of £1.2m. Its projects for BAM included Sheffield City Hall and Harrogate Royal Hall.
