Bike firm’s executive takes trip to Planet X

Fast growing bike builder and retailer Planet X Bikes has appointed Barry Dunn as its first chief operating officer.

Mr Dunn joins the Sheffield-based bike specialist from rival firm Chain Reaction Cycles, where he was head of operations.

Mr Dunn was responsible for warehouse, operations and customer service during his six years at the company.

Prior to that he held a number of senior roles at bike and car specialist Halfords and catalogue retailer Argos.

Mr Dunn said: “I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to work with a brand that I’d admired for some time.

“Their product and innovation is excellent and hopefully with the help of a few experienced individuals we can achieve something very special at Planet X.”

Planet X Bikes’ chief executive David Hanney said: “Barry is a first-class operator, a passionate cyclist with a great experience of growing businesses.

“He joins us at a very exciting time as we have had a very strong start to 2013 and are look forward to opening our second store in Barnsley.”

Planet X designs, builds and sells performance bikes, clothing and equipment.

Since starting up in Sheffield in 1987 it has become one of the UK’s largest bike makers with more than 50 employees.

It sells directly to consumers and its brands include Planet X, OnOne and Titus.

Its head office, assembly and warehousing facility are in Sheffield and it sells equipment to cyclists around the world.

The company claims it can offer lower prices by cutting out the middle man and selling directly to consumers.

Planet X bikes has been selected by Irish Olympic triathlete 
Aileen Morrison and Xterra 
and English IronMan 70.3 triathlon World Champion Julie Dibens.

Customers can buy online, over the phone or from the showroom in Sheffield.

The company makes mountain bikes, road bikes, time trial bikes, triathlon bikes, cyclocross bikes, carbon wheels, fat bikes and commuter bikes.
