Fusion said Dr Ainsworth has extensive knowledge and experience in the compound semiconductor industry, including a 20-year relationship with IQE plc.

His experience also includes managing and founding Gambit Corporate Finance.

He led the acquisition teams which purchased Peters Food Services from Grand Metropolitan and Prestwick Airport from Stagecoach.

Seren managing director Carl Griffiths said: "One of Seren Photonics' key business strategies is to secure licence deals with key GaN (gallium nitride) manufacturers. Having a chairman with a proven track record at successful, large-scale negotiations in this area is a major asset."
