Employability boost

Skills Connect has been run by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority since March last year with the aim of upskilling, reskilling or introducing new careers to West Yorkshire residents.

More than 1,000 people have been helped so far, allowing them to develop the tools they need to find a job or to improve their skills within a current career. Each course is completely funded, meaning those who enrol have access to thousands of pounds worth of education.

The courses are not just from textbooks either. They have been designed with local employers to make sure they cover the specific skills in demand right now to help secure employment.

If you are looking to return to work or learn a new skill, signing up for a course is the obvious route to take. You will learn the exact knowledge required for your sector, as well as vital careers advice and even a look at what actual jobs are available.

Skills Connect runs short, focussed courses from four days up to 16 weeks. Some are virtual, others in classrooms while there are also some hybrid courses. All are small in the number of attendees, which means personal, hands-on learning is always available.

Skills Bootcamp

The Government’s Skills Bootcamps initiative funds some of the Skills Connect courses. These courses are longer and more intensive but tailored to provide the right skills to land a job in the ever-growing and expanding digital sector.

In the future, Skills Bootcamps will also cover a wider range of subjects from project management and live events to web design and SEO. The West Yorkshire Combined Authority uses real-world knowledge from businesses and local authorities to plan each course so they can meet the needs of employees and employers.

The vital skills needed to find and retain a dream job are there to be learned - leading a team, communicating confidently and smashing an interview. Employability is at the forefront of the courses, but they also help the local economy by filling skills gaps and helping firms to grow with properly trained employees.
