Ex-cricketer is bowled over by new career in the brewery business

A FORMER cricketer who set up a brewery after missing out on a career in the game has outlined plans to achieve turnover of up to £300,000 in his first year.

Martin Kellaway, who was on the books of Hampshire and Somerset, but didn't make it into the first XI, set up WharfeBank Brewery in Pool-in-Wharfedale earlier this year.

Now he is to hold an open day tomorrow to try to win new business. Buyers from the hospitality sector as well as trade bodies and writers from drinks industry journals will be at the event.

"We want to raise awareness of where we are and showcase our beers. It is not to get drunk; it is for people to sample the ales and meet the team."

The brewery's pints include CamFell Flame, Slingers Gold and Tether Blond, as well as monthly and seasonal guest ales. It is currently making about 100 nine-gallon casks a week but the figure is constantly increasing and Mr Kellaway said they want to reach between 200 and 250 casks per week by the end of the year.

Mr Kellaway left cricket in 1991 and began his career in the drinks industry with Bass before being seconded to Britvic soft drinks. He later worked at London Pride maker Fuller's and then Edinburgh-based Caledonian, which makes Deuchars.
