Factories’ quarterly figures worst in two years

North Yorkshire aerospace composites manufacturer Marshall Slingsby said it is defying the economic gloom and expects a better 2012.

Managing director Steven Boyd said he expects this year to show an improvement on 2011 and 2010. But he added this will be mainly down to the Kirkbymoorside company’s “hard work and endeavour”.

“There’s not much new business through new clients, but more with our existing customer base,” he said. “The defence industry has been hit and we’re about 70 per cent defence related.” Mr Boyd, whose firm supplies components for unmanned aerial vehicles and submarines, said it held prices in recent years to remain competitive.

Slingsby, which employs 100 staff at its North Yorkshire base, plans to recruit more engineers and shop floor workers as it grows, but much depends on contracts.
