Farmers to share bird life success techniques

A series of farm walks are being held by farmers across the county to encourage others to adopt wildlife-friendly land management techniques that will attract farmland birds.

The walks are being held by the Campaign for the Farmed Environment (CFE) and will focus on how field boundaries such as hedges and field edges can support bird life.

Different hedgerow management techniques will be discussed to help landowners find ways to encourage specific species.

Farmers can attend the walks for free, with the first set to be hosted by Fraser Hugill and Rosy Eaton at Throstle Nest in Sproxton near Helmsley on February 14, between 9.30am-12.30pm and 1-4pm.

Further walks will be hosted by Helen and David Rhodes of New Hall Farm in Ardsley, Barnsley on February 16 at 1-4pm, and by Andrew and Chrissie Featherstone at Westfield Farm in Langtoft, Driffield on February 17, 1-4pm.

Participants will be updated on Countryside Stewardship rules and CFE voluntary options to encourage wildlife.

Host farmer Mr Hugill, who is the regional co-ordinator for the CFE in Yorkshire and the North East, said: “This is a great opportunity to show farmers the benefits of enhancing wildlife on your farm and demonstrate the importance of managing hedges and field edges across the farm and how to do this both inside and outside of formal schemes.”
