Findus aims to reign in Spain again

FOOD group Findus completed two acquisitions yesterday, heralding its return to the Spanish market.

The private-equity owned business agreed deals for frozen vegetable and ready meal brands.

Findus, which employs 1,700 people in Grimsby at Young’s Seafood, aims to become the market leader in Spain by consolidating the vegetable and ready-meal categories and by entering new categories.

Chris Britton, group chief executive, said: “There is significant scope for growth in vegetables, ready-meals and the frozen category as a whole in Spain, Europe’s fifth largest frozen market.

“We’re looking forward to driving innovation, growing our presence, reinvesting in our brands and inspiring our consumers in Spain.”

A spokeswoman told the Yorkshire Post: “As the business in Spain will be a sister company to Young’s Seafood Limited, within the Findus Group, we will have the opportunity to share knowledge, insight and best practice.”

Findus has invested £1.5m in its Grimsby operations over the last 18 months.

The operations represent the biggest centre of seafood processing in the UK, producing around 65,000 tonnes of fish products a year, while the group regards the North Lincolnshire fishing town as “the spiritual home” of Young’s.
