A fizz in Barr's trading

Irn-Bru maker AG Barr forecast annual sales of £200m yesterday after continued strong demand for "Scotland's other national drink".

As well as Irn-Bru's success in the final quarter of the financial year, Barr reported excellent trading by its Rubicon fruit juice brands.

It is expected that profits will be ahead of City expectations after sales growth of more than 20 per cent in the year to the end of January, compared with a rise of 2 per cent achieved by the wider

market in the 2009 calendar year.

The Cumbernauld-based company, which also makes St Clements and Tizer, has produced Irn-Bru to a secret recipe for more than 130 years.

Chief executive Roger White said: "The business continues to outperform the market."

Barr also announced an extended 10-year sales and distribution contract for the Rockstar Energy drink brand in the UK and Ireland. The product launched in the UK in 2007.

Meanwhile, the company dealt a blow to its 100-strong workforce in Mansfield by confirming plans to close the production site early next year.

The change is the result of supply chain restructuring and plans to invest 10m in additional operating capacity at its Cumbernauld site.
