Gallery to provide shop window for the region’s artists

Fine art graduate Emma-Jane Whelan, from Nunburnholme, will launch ART&ROSE Gallery in Market Street, Pocklington, with an opening exhibition on November 11.

Named after her children, Arthur and Rose, the commercial gallery will showcase creative talent in Yorkshire, in particular the East Riding, and will bring together a mix of paintings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics and hand-made jewellery.

Talking about the new venture, she said: “A once in a lifetime opportunity to combine my love of art and the art of selling presented itself over the summer and here I am, three months later, about to open ART&ROSE Gallery. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, but it’s very exciting.”

She added: “There are so many gifted artists and craftsmen in East Yorkshire whose talents go largely unnoticed as they don’t have a ‘shop window’ to display their work. I’m hoping that ART&ROSE Gallery will help to make the artists and their work more accessible by creating a beautiful, modern space where local people and visitors to the East Riding can spend time appreciating the diverse and engaging talents of painters, ceramicists, print-makers, photographers, jewellers, and sculptors who find inspiration in this unique landscape.”

Featuring the work of 17 local artists, the opening exhibition includes ceramics from Ellerton based Jill Ford, pen and ink drawings from Hull artist Fred Kennett, textiles from Kilham ethical artist Corinne Young, pottery from Londesborough’s Tony Wells and reclaimed glass sculpture by Suzanne Dekker.

All the work will be original or limited editions, and will be available to buy. ART&ROSE Gallery will be open Monday to Saturday 9.30am-4.30pm, except Wednesdays when it will close at 3pm.
