Giant bear sculptures arrive at Leeds Bradford Airport ahead of public art trail

Thirty five giant bear sculptures have arrived at Leeds Bradford Airport ahead of a large-scale public art trail set to take over the city this summer to raise money for Leeds Children’s Hospital.

The bears will form a family-friendly trail of discovery and bring Michael Rosen’s We’re Going on a Bear Hunt story to life.

The message of the story is about how we deal with our fears. This is reflected in the experience of many children in hospital, who might fear the unknown, or the knowledge of what is to come.

The money raised by Leeds Bear Hunt will help create a children’s hospital for the future, enhanced with the latest technology and clinical equipment.

Each bear along the trail, which has been developed in partnership with Wild in Art and Walker Productions/Lupus Films, will be decorated with a unique design by a local or national artist.

Businesses, employees, and customers across West Yorkshire are invited to join the trail by sponsoring a bear – with five still up for grabs. Sponsors will get their pick of designs to be displayed on their very own bear.

Leeds Bradford Airport is sponsoring one of the sculptures.

John Cunliffe, commercial and strategy director at Leeds Bradford Airport, said: “This is a great opportunity for us as a business at the heart of the region to be a part of an event that encourages people to engage with the community. We’re delighted to support Leeds Children’s Hospital and all the great work they do.”

Schools are also able to get involved in a range of creative learning activities, and many across Leeds are designing and adopting their very own mini–Bear Cub sculpture.

Paul Watkins, director of fundraising at Leeds Hospitals Charity, said: “We’re happy to see our bears have landed safely in Leeds ahead of the Bear Hunt in the summer.

"We’re eager for families and businesses alike to get involved and help us raise money for Leeds Children’s Hospital. July can’t come soon enough. The next step is for the Bears to be decorated by the wonderful team of talented artists, designers and illustrators we have waiting in the wings.”

Following the adventure across Leeds, Leeds Hospitals Charity will be auctioning the Bears in September 2023 to raise funds for Leeds Children’s Hospital.
