Globalisation presents an opportunity and a threat for law firms

What’s been the biggest development you’ve seen in the legal world during your career?

For commercial firms seeking to grow their business while retaining staff, globalisation is an opportunity and a threat.

Firms who grasp the opportunity are likely to realise the potential for their people and for their clients. At the same time, it is important to look close to home and to the requirements of clients on our doorstep.

What law would you like to see changed?

Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 – I have been looking at it for nearly 15 years!

Europe has had a major influence financial services law and practice over the last 25 years. Delivery has been impacted by globalisation and Europe has to maintain its competitive position in the world economy.

What is the most exciting work you’ve ever done?

Arbitration at the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street – along with my stockbroker client, we donned our pin stripes and our best English accents before going into battle.

I was slightly taken aback when one of the arbitrators asked the pointed question: “I guess you have different rules on hearsay evidence in the UK?”.

We won, and I left any form of career as a litigator with a 100 per cent record.

What advice would you give someone starting out in the (legal) profession?

Work hard. Play hard.
