In step with the Government’s current commitment to fund ways of turning agricultural innovation into commercial technology that can benefit the wider industry, the new study centre at the York-based college is due to open to students at the start of the next academic year.

The ‘Agri-Centre’, as it will be known, is an initiative that forms a major part of a £4.8m project at the heart of the college’s Westfield Farm and initial building work is now underway.

Once completed in September, it will have lecture rooms, an engineering workshop and dedicated office space for AHDB Beef & Lamb (a branch of the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board).

Adjoining Westfield Farm, it will neighbour the College’s dairy unit which involves 280 pedigree Holstein cows, some of which are milked via robotic system.

Executive principal Liz Philip hailed the impact she anticipates the new centre will have on students’ studies.

She said: “Askham Bryan College is renowned for the high standard of learning and practical skills it provides students, as evidenced by the growing number of young people who choose to study with us.

“This centre provides a focus for both theory and practical learning, both of which are vital to equip the industry leaders and workers of tomorrow with the skills they need. We pride ourselves on nurturing work-ready students and this initiative provides the ideal environment for that to happen.

“The Centre is a significant investment by the College plus we have been supported by the York and North Yorkshire LEP. It is a real vote of confidence in the future of the agricultural industry.”

Specialising in land-based subjects, the college offers courses from diploma level to Foundation degrees.
